SMTP Not Service

Good morning, I need some help before I'll gonna be crazy.. I'm on my father's MacBook OS X 10.6.8 because he has a problem with the SMTP Service. I try to do a lot of differents things that I find in Internet but nothing happens.. Anybody can explain me what I can do?
